Safety: Our Top Priority

At Tata Steel Minerals Canada (TSMC), ensuring the safety of every worker every day is our number one priority. We firmly believe that all accidents and injuries are preventable and that exceptional health and safety performance is critical to our long-term success as a business and as a responsible stakeholder in the regions where we operate.

Mining inherently involves risks, but we are steadfast in our commitment to achieving a zero-harm workplace. This is not just an aspiration but a realistic target we work towards daily.

Our safety strategy is built on a robust Critical Risk Management process. This approach focuses on identifying potential risks, implementing critical controls, and ensuring they are in place before any task begins. By proactively addressing risks, we strive to eliminate incidents that could lead to fatalities, disabilities, workplace injuries, accidents, or major catastrophes.

Building a Culture of Safety

Safety is a shared responsibility at TSMC. Every individual plays a vital role in fostering our CRM culture, from operators and engineers to contractors, employees, and consultants. We empower everyone to:

  • Understand and practice safe working methods.
  • Take proactive actions to ensure their own safety and the safety of their peers.
  • Stand down from tasks they deem unsafe.

Supervisors and managers lead by example, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to safety. They ensure their teams have the knowledge, training, and equipment required to perform their jobs safely and effectively.

Commitment to Continuous Improvement

Our dedication to health and safety underpins everything we do. Beyond reducing injuries, we actively monitor technological advancements and adopt industry best practices to foster a culture of continuous workplace health and safety improvement.

At TSMC, safety is more than a priority—it’s a core value that defines who we are and how we operate.

Health: Supporting Our Greatest Asset

At Tata Steel Minerals Canada (TSMC), our employees are our most valuable asset. Protecting, promoting, and enhancing their health and well-being is as vital to us as ensuring workplace safety.

We achieve this by identifying and managing key health risks and offering comprehensive support for overall health and wellness.

We want our employees to thrive both at work and at home. To this end, we’ve implemented various programs designed to support their physical and mental health, both on-site and off-site.

Healthy at Work

Our Schefferville mining operation operates fully equipped medical clinics staffed by registered nurses. These clinics provide services such as:

  • Treatment for work-related injuries and illnesses.
  • Annual medical surveillance programs.
  • Pre-employment fitness assessments.

Beyond addressing workplace health needs, we also offer proactive programs to promote overall well-being, including:

  • Blood pressure monitoring.
  • Mental health awareness initiatives.
  • Smoking cessation support.
  • Flu vaccination clinics.

We are committed to identifying, evaluating, and mitigating environmental hazards in all our workplaces—including mines, processing plants, ports, and administrative offices—that could impact our employees' health. Our hygiene team collaborates with employees to implement and monitor appropriate controls, ensuring long-term health and safety.

Healthy at Home

Our care for employees extends beyond the workplace. We recognize the importance of supporting healthy lifestyles and providing full health insurance coverage to all employees.

This comprehensive coverage is part of our commitment to helping employees, and their families lead healthy lives.

Continuous Commitment to Well-Being

At TSMC, we believe that a healthy workforce is the foundation of a productive and sustainable future. By supporting our employees’ health at work and at home, we’re building a stronger, more resilient team.

Environmental Responsibility

At Tata Steel Minerals Canada (TSMC), we understand that healthy ecosystems are essential to our business and our communities. We are committed to mitigating the impact of our operations on nature and promoting environmental stewardship at every stage of our activities.

Striving for No Net Loss in Biodiversity

Healthy ecosystems are critical for climate resilience and provide essential services to the regions where we operate. Our ambition is to achieve no net biodiversity loss in our operational areas. This involves balancing any negative impacts with positive outcomes through robust mitigation efforts and sustainable practices

Minimizing Our Environmental Footprint

A core goal at TSMC is to reduce the environmental and biodiversity impacts of mining throughout its lifecycle—from exploration to mine closure. Our operations are unique within the iron ore industry:

  • We mine ore in Schefferville.
  • Transport the final product over 620 kilometres by rail to Sept-Iles.
  • Ship it to customers worldwide.

Each stage of this process has the potential to affect natural ecosystems and human environments. We take responsibility for minimizing or eliminating these impacts on the land, air, water, and local communities.

Governed by Laws, Driven by Best Practices

Our mining operations comply with strict environmental laws and regulations across Quebec, Newfoundland, and Labrador. However, we go beyond compliance by proactively identifying potential impacts before they occur. This proactive approach is at the heart of our commitment to environmental excellence.

Partnering with Indigenous Communities and Stakeholders

Collaboration is a cornerstone of our environmental strategy. We work closely with local Indigenous communities and engage local, regional, national, and international stakeholders. These partnerships ensure that our environmental management aligns with best practices and reflects our commitment to continuous improvement.

Building a Sustainable Future

Meeting and exceeding our environmental responsibilities is not just about compliance—it is essential to maintaining stakeholder confidence and fostering strong community relationships. By prioritizing environmental stewardship, TSMC is working toward a sustainable future for our business and the communities we serve.

Prioritizing Safety and Sustainability

Commited to Protecting People and the Planet

Safety and sustainability are central to TSMC mission. By ensuring a secure workplace through robust training and reducing environmental impacts with sustainable practices, they demonstrate a strong commitment to protecting both people and the planet.
